Click here to go back This is a very impressive (and atypical) example of this date and here's why. The vast majority of deep mirror prooflike 1896-P dollars fall into the "brilliant" DMPL category, which means the fields are adequately mirrored but the devices provide no real contrast to speak of. This coin is the exception to the rule and is the most cameoed example of this date that I have ever seen. The fields are very deeply mirrored and the devices are well frosted providing a pronounced (nearly black and white) cameo effect. Moreover, this awesome coin is boldly struck with wonderfully preserved surfaces that reside at the upper end of the grade level. A premium quality deep mirror cameo prooflike specimen that has few if any peers. By the way, this coin is very scarce in this state of preservation as evidenced by the fact that PCGS has certified just one hundred nineteen coins at this level with a scant eleven graded higher.
