The current thrust of today’s coin market may appear to be for modern bullion issues, but dealers are well aware of the fact that earlier collector coins provide success for long-term business. Modern bullion is simply a means to entice potential collectors into numismatics. With buy/sell spreads as tight as they are for bullion coins, dealers realize that their biggest profits come from collectors with visions of completing sets in various series of classic coins. This week’s Milwaukee ANA is a perfect example of how important collector coins are to numismatics. Attendance by dealers and collectors is expected to be formidable because they want to buy rare coins. Dealers report strong demand for key coins and especially those with low census numbers. The cost to acquire key coins is on the rise; dealers will pay more and collectors are quite aware of this so they expect to pay more as well. Dealers have increased their wholesale prices in specific areas. Most of these increases are for coins that are on want lists but are not frequently located. Acquiring the occasional rarity seems to be the central theme of today’s demand. The bullion coins are generally unchanged over the last couple of weeks even though prices moved higher for a short time.
