Dealers from the Milwaukee ANA reported that the coin market continues to be very strong for rare coins and those low-census issues located on an infrequent basis. However, many did not have the show they anticipated because there is not enough original material coming into the market so most dealer inventories were similar to previous shows. The only place to consistently find new material seems to be at major auctions where competition is very brisk. One observation taken from the show was that “10% of collectable coins are soft while 90% are difficult to acquire.” The 90% make up those better to rare issues and the 10% are the most common coins you see in excessive quantities and make up the majority of dealer inventories. Dealers are looking for a new group of beginning collectors to buy into the common coins and relieve the glut of everyday material. The results of dealer trading activity over the last two weeks in Milwaukee created a surplus of increases in the Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide this week. Further wholesale and retail price guide adjustments will be made throughout the week as more results come in from Milwaukee.
