Numismatists were out in force this past weekend at the Baltimore Coin & Currency Convention. Dealers and collectors attended in huge numbers as the market is very active in this current climate. However, and this is very important, the market is very specific in what coins are in demand. Just “stuff” is not trading unless it is discounted. If you are looking for the same coins as other numismatists, you have to be very competitive or you will be left behind. Many dealers reported that this was their best show of the year while others simply stated that it was okay. Again, we are seeing lots of activity but it is directed into very specific areas of the market. We are sure that the reason for this is more and more numismatists are becoming more knowledgeable and they understand that mintages are only part of the story when determining FMV. Availability gives a clearer picture of value in many instances. Now that NGC and PCGS have a long history of certifying coins, 20 years, the census reports go a long way toward helping astute collectors determine what they are currently trying to locate and the grades that may be available. This is becoming a real study in supply and demand economics. Since numismatics is showing that it is the new frontier, the modern collectors are not likely to release any of their newfound coins all too soon. This tends to dry up the overall market and force prices to premiums of current FMV levels for coins that are in strong demand. The metals remain strong even if they are lower this morning. Gold is currently at $624.30 and Silver is $12.82. Platinum is just the $1200 mark at $1198. -What's Hot?
