Can This Market Get Any Hotter?

Monday, January 30, 2006 | Printer Friendly Printer Friendly

We are seeing so much activity that we wonder whether this market can be any more active. Our answer is a resounding “Yes!” As strong as some series are at this time, we feel that collectors are still being rather selective in their pursuit of coins. There are numerous series that have not had much movement in FMV and offer lots of upside. Of course, it will take a certain amount of demand to cause the increases in FMV over a period of time. But by looking at the census reports in NGC and PCGS you can definitely find some very interesting coins that have not moved up in a long time.

When you see coins that have a population of 100-500, but are considered common dates, the most populated coins in the same series may have populations of 2,000-3,000. What we see is the number of collectors in the numismatic universe that will eventually influence the FMV prices for these lower populated common date issues. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that a few million collectors can create considerable demand in a short amount of time.

Now add into the mix the movement of the metals and you will find a whole new area of coins that can be under priced compared to other coins of equal population. If the metals continue to rise, as many analysts expect, you can just imagine the carryover effect that it will have on the psychology of numismatics. Gold has now jumped to $565.90 and Silver is charging toward $10, now at $9.75. Platinum is moving rather briskly as well, up to $1,064.
