Collectors Need Coins

Tuesday, May 30, 2006 | Printer Friendly Printer Friendly

And this is the week to stock up. The Long Beach Expo has arrived with all the major auctions supplying a tremendous amount of rarities. If you are a buyer, this is the week and Southern California is the place. Along with the Long Beach Convention, Heritage will host another Signature Sale to which collectors have become accustomed. The number of rarities in this sale is sure to make this a very successful event.

The collector market continues to blaze. Retailers are doing a great job of locating coins for collectors excited about the prospects of future profits. The more shows we attend, the more we see how aggressive the collector has become over the last year or so. They’ve done their homework with current prices; they know certain ranges for the quality expected and are quick to make purchases. These collectors are well aware of other competitors waiting around the corner for the right coin at the right price.

We may see metals move back and forth, but the coin market is headed to higher levels. All things considered, as long as the demand remains what it is today, the lack of supplies will take care of prices. We have seen generic Morgan and Peace Dollars absolutely jump over the last few weeks, after remaining in a funk for quite a long time. Thousands of MS63 – MS66 coins are going off the market and the number of coins resting in dealer inventories has dwindled considerably. In addition, the generics have caught up to some of the better dates so we are seeing some collectors paying just a little more to get Dollars that have are considered to be a little tougher to get and always command a premium in a normal market.
