     Numismedia Coin Market Report

Demand Continues for Better Dates

Monday, October 23, 2006 | Printer Friendly Printer Friendly

We are finding a considerable amount of activity throughout the spectrum of numismatics.  If you think the coin market is slow because there has been a shift in demand to the modern issue coinage, you are way off base. The shift in visual demand may be to modern issue coinage causing the premiums to drop for early generic U.S. Gold, but that presumes collectors or investors are not purchasing early U.S. Gold. This is not the case; we are seeing many dealers on the wholesale market buying these discounted coins and selling them to their very astute collectors. This is the marketing foresight of many dealers convincing their customers that the timing is right when premiums are at this very low point in the cycle.

We are also finding many of the better date issues (the key dates that are not found on a regular basis) still in strong demand. Buffalo Nickels, Mercury Dimes, Walking Liberty Halves are very much sought after by collectors who need them to complete their sets. The MS63 and higher grades do not last long in inventory as the more aggressive buyers quickly buy them when offered. When you think of Indian and Lincoln Cents, and Standing Liberty Quarters, we do not see many of the tougher dates in MS63 and higher because of this strong demand.

The Las Vegas Coin, Stamp, & Collectibles Show begins this week and we will see you there beginning on Wednesday at the Riviera Hotel. Bowers and Merena has a major auction that takes place on the 27th.
