     Numismedia Coin Market Report

Early Type Soars in FMV

Monday, March 6, 2006 | Printer Friendly Printer Friendly

Even when there are two large coin shows on the same weekend, there is still enough business for most dealers to be satisfied. The Las Vegas Coin Show and the Palm Beach Show caused dealers to split their loyalties this past weekend but coins are trading so readily that there seems to be enough activity to create satisfactory sales. Dealers did complain that there was not a large public turnout at either agenda but the retail dealers did say they sold coins to retail buyers. The market remains very solid with many coins rising in FMV.

Early Type Coins are very steady and most of the higher buyers are not getting as many coins as they desire for their customers. Especially strong are Early Gold and Bust Halves and Dollars. When we see these coins for sale, most of them are well above our listed FMV for the date and grade. More interesting is that many times we do not see these coins offered again so we are sure they are going off the market. That is one of the reasons you will see so many of the early issues rising in FMV.

The metals were very steady last week with Silver being the big news as it surpassed the $10 level. The metals were down slightly this am until there was a big sell off. Silver dropped back to just under $10, at $9.98 and Gold is at $553.90. Platinum fell to $1036 but the market is still open and anything can happen.
