Although it is just a bullion gold coin, the new $50 Gold Buffalo is drawing massive publicity around the country, generated notably by the popularity of the Buffalo Nickel. Not only can you still buy them from the U.S. Mint, many dealers already have them graded by NGC and PCGS and available for sale in MS and Proof 69 & 70. Some dealers are even offering to buy them on a futures basis as long as you confirm them for delivery by a certain date. With the metals moving erratically, but generally upward, it looks like a lot of buyers are speculating that these will move higher in the near future. Whether they will replace the American Eagle as a substitute for bullion investing remains to be seen. The coin market is still very strong as seen at the Baltimore Coin & Currency Convention. Dealers have long want lists that mostly go unfilled as specific coins are not coming into the market fast enough for the aggressive buyers. Key date coinage is the mainstay for most collectors. These higher priced rarities within a specific series are very hard to find at reasonable levels. In the Lincoln series, the 1909 S VDB and 1914 D are always easily sold when priced reasonably. The key statement here is reasonable because most of the time the owners of these issues want premium prices. This is generally the case in all series with particular key dates that are in demand. Morgan Dollars are receiving lots of attention of late. After the generics rose to over $180 wholesale several weeks ago, they have now become more reasonable in the $160-$165 area. However, anything better than common will bring a premium if it has attractive toning or has blazing white luster. It almost seems like this market never lets up except for the occasional glut of common dates in the market. After rising all last week the bullion markets are apparently taking profits this morning. Gold is currently at $648.70 and Silver is $11.00. Platinum is $1233. Gold and Platinum are still higher than this time last week. -What's Hot? $10 Indian Gold MS63 and Higher BU Rolls Dollars, Walkers, Franklins Gold Commems MS63 and Higher Silver Commems MS63 and Higher Barber Coins MS63 and higher Early Gold -- $2 ½, $5, & $10 XF & higher Battle Creek Dollars Lovely Toned Morgans Carson City Dollars Govt Holders Carson City Dollars NGC Certified Walkers 1916 to 1947 MS63 and higher Indian Cents Red & Red/Brown MS & Proof Early Lincoln Cents Red; MS64 & higher Key Dates in all series Dollars Morgan & Peace in MS63 and Higher Modern Commems With Orig.
