Gold and Silver Surge

Monday, July 14, 2008 | Printer Friendly Printer Friendly

Gold and Silver are both approaching recent highs and analysts feel they are destined to advance even higher. The weak economy seems to support higher prices. This week’s Modern Wholesale Dealer Price Guide presents many increases for bullion related modern coins; however, there are still many declines for coins that grade less than perfect. Some issues, previously valued as better dates, have had an increase in the number of coins certified and, with demand down, the wholesale levels falter.

Registry collectors are still in the market for highest graded coins in most modern series. Roosevelt Dimes and Washington Quarters show many advances for MS68 silver issues. Increased demand and few coins make for higher wholesale prices. Nevertheless, we did find that many MS67 and lower Washington Quarters are in decline this week as supplies are on the rise and collectors have slowed down on their buying mostly due to economic considerations.

One of the true rare dates in the Lincoln Cent series is the 1909 VDB in Proof. With an original mintage of only 1194, it is one of the more difficult coins to locate. No matter what the grade, every time we see one trading hands it is at a premium of current levels. It has advanced in most grades of PR63 and higher since the first of the year. This week the PR66 & 67 advanced substantially.
