The Long Beach Expo began slowly on setup day; dealers seemed to be waiting to see if the public was going to show any interest in coins before they started to do business among themselves. But once the public arrived, dealers quickly took advantage of every opportunity to buy or sell coins. Even though some dealers from the East Coast stayed away, the rest of those in attendance made the best of what the market offered. The coin market may be adjusting to new Market levels, but once dealers realize this they will be quick to adjust their prices, both buying and selling, in order to remain competitive. Bargain hunting may well fuel the current market while dealers and collectors are looking for new opportunities. Of course, strength in the metals is attracting much of today’s activities. Whether collectors or investors are buying modern bullion issues or early U.S. Gold, their confidence in metals as a primary method of maintaining and growing today’s wealth is a major factor in this market. Judging by the number of increases in this week’s Moderns Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide for Eagles, $5 & $10 Gold, and Buffalo Gold, it is apparent that buyers are showing a major interest. Certified Buffalo Gold and Proof Gold Eagles with the original box and papers from the mint are earning a majority of this current market. The rest of the Moderns market appears to be rather lackluster. Interest seems very subdued for modern Lincoln Cents through Presidential Dollars. Many of the adjustments are lower simply because there are too many sellers and not enough buyers at previous levels. However, there is still the occasional buyer for Registry coins, especially for those issues where the population is very low; typically, fewer than 10 coins certified in the highest grades.
