The June Long Beach Expo is usually the least active of the year. This one was somewhat quiet. There was some retail but not enough to help the majority. The theme was definitely wholesale in nature. Dealers still complain of not locating enough new collections to distribute at coin shows. Stagnant inventory is difficult to sell unless it is discounted. The good news is that better coins are still very active and we noticed that many key date coins are in strong demand at higher levels. One of the leading indicators of a rise in prices is the 1909 S VDB Lincoln; it is stronger in all grades. Toward the end of the show the metals started to get hot as European Banks announced they would hold back on selling any more gold reserves for a while. The feeling is that the metals are headed higher and holding inventory equates to larger gross sales in the future. In the last few days, the metals have made up a lot of ground on recent losses.
