Market Looking More Optimistic

Monday, September 25, 2006 | Printer Friendly Printer Friendly

We are seeing positive signs that more areas of the coin market are receiving attention from dealers and collectors. While generic Morgan & Peace Dollars are still soft, along with common U.S. Gold, common date Buffalo Nickels, Mercury Dimes, Walkers and even Franklins are on many want lists. This is a good indication that there are programs in place to market sets of these coins to ready collectors. While these areas are strengthening, it also means that the better dates or more difficult dates to locate will become easier to sell at current FMV levels.

We continue to monitor activity in old Silver Commemoratives; the coins have to be nice for the grade (this means they must be better than average), but there are plenty of buyers out there trying to add coins to their growing collections. In the next few weeks we should see some additional funds in the market as major auctions are not as plentiful. Over the last five weeks auctions have taken at least $100 million out of the coin market. It takes awhile to replenish this kind of money.

The metals are lower as the week begins. Gold is currently at $584.50 and Silver is $11.04. Platinum has been having a lot of trouble supporting previous levels, now at $1121.
