Market Sizzling in Most Areas

Monday, April 3, 2006 | Printer Friendly Printer Friendly

The Santa Clara Expo just ended and now most of the nation’s top dealers will be headed to Atlanta for the Mid Winter ANA. The action does not slow as the market remains very strong and buyers have to be aggressive if they want to capture their share of the trading. Dealers in Santa Clara reported extremely active wholesale business with an increase in the usual retail at this venue. It seemed to us that once the show opened there were a lot more visitors than in past shows here. We did notice numerous collectors buying coins and they brought lots cash with them. This is a sign that the amount of money available for coins is on the rise and most collectors know they have to be competitive to acquire the coins they want. If they hesitate and walk around the floor, when they return to purchase a wanted item, there is a good chance it will already be gone.

There are so many series in demand at this time it is no wonder that the FMV is charging forward. Nice coins are bringing premiums, thus causing the FMV to move even higher. Those buyers with an astute sense of the market and the economy are gaining more than their share of the nice coins available. Many numismatists are using the census reports to determine low pop coins and then they are going after these coins when available. We saw this at Santa Clara and we fully expect that this trend will continue.

The metals are brisk and prices are even higher than last week. Silver has jumped to $11.74, nearly a dollar higher than this time last week. Gold is up to $589.30 and Platinum is $1067.

Heritage Auction Galleries will conduct the Signature Sale in conjunction with the Atlanta Convention this week.
