Market Turns to Presents

Monday, December 4, 2006 | Printer Friendly Printer Friendly

This is the time of the year that most retail coin shops turn to gift-giving numismatic items. This includes everything numismatics has to offer but there is more emphasis on jewelry related and display packaged coins. There is still a strong desire to fill special needs of favorite numismatists so demand is fairly specific. Dealers concentrate on filling these needs and are not as intense about their usual strategies of supporting the market. They are also preparing for their annual trek to Orlando, Florida in early January for FUN.

Nonetheless, the metals continue to push to higher levels and this is creating renewed interest in traditional U.S. Gold coins. Prices in most of the Gold series are rising across the charts. Activity has picked up once again in the $5 and $10 Indian series after the profit-taking of the last couple of months. These two series appear to be solid at current levels for the time being.

Another practice that occurs near the end of the year is that of taking profits and losses on numismatic collections. This is more typical of heavy hitters in higher tax brackets needing to adjust their earnings. They may sell some of their holdings before the end of the year and then buy the same package back at the beginning of 2007. Numismatics is wonderful now that collectors can treat their collections like some other investments and take advantage of tax laws.
