Metals Rebound from Downward Trend

Monday, August 18, 2008 | Printer Friendly Printer Friendly

The metals have moved higher today after last week’s major decline. Gold fell below the $800 level for the first time this year and Silver dove to under $13. The U.S. Dollar appears stronger overseas and oil is dropping. The U.S. economy is still questionable at best so investors are very nervous. Gold (as of this morning) is at $801.40 and Silver is $13.14. Check current prices before completing any transactions.

On a positive note, there are many advances this week in the HD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide. Even though the more common U.S. Gold coins fell because of lower bullion, the better date issues are still in strong demand. Early Bust Gold and low census issues are extremely active and several dates rose considerably due to higher prices realized in the Heritage Auction at ANA. Collectors are very aggressive for issues that have not been on the market for a long time and especially for condition census issues. One coin in particular was the 1804 $2 ½ Gold with 13 Star Reverse; the NGC AU55 coin brought $322,000. We have not seen this date trade in several years and this coin created substantially higher prices in all grades we report above AU53.

The Deep Mirror Prooflike Morgan Dollar chart indicates numerous increases this week. Some of the finest known coins traded recently in Baltimore and many collectors were very active. The finest known PCGS 1881 CC in MS67 DMPL brought $63,250 and the 1900 MS65 DMPL realized $51,750. Many others attracted bids well above current wholesale prices. However, a few bargains created declines in this week’s Price Guide. The 1887/6 in PCGS MS65 DMPL sold for $27,600. Dealers had anticipated that this coin would bring a much higher price.
