     Numismedia Coin Market Report

Modern Issues Active

Monday, October 30, 2006 | Printer Friendly Printer Friendly

Much of the activity we are seeing is in modern issues. This may seem like a short term market but to some it is very real. Dealers and collectors are making thousands of dollars on purchasing coins from the mint and having them certified at the major grading services. The problem that some dealers see is that when these coins grade under MS or PR69 then the coins wind up being offered for sale at under mint issue prices. Therefore, the market reports a negative value because of certification rather than a positive. This does not make sense to most numismatists and appears to be counter productive to the overall market. This could spell short term profits for long term negative overall appeal. Further, the mint appears to be changing the rules on the public at the expense of their own profits. The public will eventually wise up and sales could suffer as a result.

The coin market for “real” coins still appears mixed. Low population or short availability coins are very popular and command prices in excess of current FMV, while everyday coins are soft and typically need discounts in order to sell in quantities. The good news here is that coins are selling as long as the buyer and seller get the chance to negotiate.

The metals are beginning the week on an up note. Gold is currently at $606.50 and Silver is $12.16. Platinum is $1085.
