National Weather Dampens Long Beach

Monday, February 19, 2007 | Printer Friendly Printer Friendly

Severe weather conditions, mostly on the Eastern half of the United States, took a toll on the just completed Long Beach Expo. Many dealers were not able to attend because of cancelled flights and the end result was that business was down compared to previous shows.

On the other hand, metals remained positive much of the week and improved chances for retail sales. Many dealers reported that their sales of U.S. Gold helped them have a decent show. In addition, many wholesale dealers continue to make the most of this market by trading among themselves to get rid of old inventory while adding new coins for their customers back home.

The George Washington Golden Dollar was released this past week amid much fanfare. The Mint is certain that these dollars will be widely accepted despite the failure of the Susan B. Anthony and the Sacagawea Dollars. It remains to be seen if this new Presidential Dollar program will follow the same path of popularity as the State Quarter program.

Metals are higher this morning as Gold passes the $670 mark, at $670.60. Silver is trying to forge past $14.00. Platinum has surged over $1,200, currently at $1214.
