Original rolls of just about anything are extremely hot right now. Even Modern Eagles can be sold by the roll to any number of dealers who have customers for the bullion related material. However, the most active rolls are Morgan and Peace Dollars, Walkers (when you can find them), and Franklins. There are so many buyers that reported prices are just an indication as dealers will jump right over other buyers attempts to locate nice original rolls. This market is so strong that it has become very profitable for dealers who stock large quantities of silver mint sets to cut out the silver half dollars and make up rolls to sell. Of course, this means that the prices for the mint sets will eventually have to adjust (rise) as availability becomes sparse. Now that the metals have surged past previous barriers, we have to take a serious look at what effects this may have on the overall coin market. It is obvious that the natural progression of bullion prices increases the value of all common silver and gold coinage. The intrinsic value of these coins has far reaching effects on the rest of the coin market. Rising bullion prices can cause new buyers to become collectors of numismatic coins as well as the bullion coins they purchase as their first entry into numismatics. On the other hand, some very serious collectors could change their strategy and look for quick profits in a fast moving bullion market. This might mean they forego some rarities for the time being and look to bullion until it slows down. Whatever the strategy there is a lot of both going on as the market share for most dealers has increased over the last six months. Gold shot right past $600 and now is trading at $605.40; Silver never looked back as it ran past $13.00 to a current $13.13. Platinum is still pointing toward $1100 an ounce; right now it is at $1092. -What's Hot?
