     Numismedia Coin Market Report

Selective Market Remains Active

Monday, March 12, 2007 | Printer Friendly Printer Friendly

Dealers are about to find out how good the coin market is as they travel to Charlotte for this week’s ANA National Money Show. Despite the negative run bullion has had the last two weeks, there are many positive areas in the real coin market. In addition, when the metals falter as they have, it provides an opportunity for those who feel it is only temporary to add to their holdings of bullion related U.S. coins.

In this week’s Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide we have begun to list the increases and decreases for specific issues: prices in bold are increases, while prices in italics are decreases. This will enable you to quickly discern any changes in our market report. Further, in areas where you see numerous changes you can anticipate hot (or cold) markets.

For example, we have updated the entire Seated Dollar series and there are a massive number of increases. This has been a very active area for quite awhile as dealers and collectors look for specific dates and grades. Just about all dates are being sought as long as they are problem-free for the grade.

Early $5 Gold indicates many increases for AU58 to MS63 as these coins are few and far between. Also, most owners of this material will want in excess of current wholesale prices. The late common date $5 Liberties suffered from recent lower bullion as many dates declined. This is what we mean about identifying potential opportunities in a series where numerous declines are apparent.
