Skyrocketing Metals Push FMV Higher

Monday, January 16, 2006 | Printer Friendly Printer Friendly

As Gold, Silver, and Platinum continue to move upward, FMV prices are trying to keep up. If you are confident that metals will continue to increase, this may be a good time to look for certain bargains in the market. As dealers concentrate on bullion-related coins, buy prices will tend to increase across the board. However, some sellers will be offering some better date and semi key date coins at prices that seem under priced. This market is moving so fast that most dealers cannot keep up. Since dealers are in a business to buy and sell coins, their chief interest is to move material as fast as they can. The faster they turn material, the more profits they are able to produce on a percentage basis.

Those dealers and collectors in a position to hold for the long haul can be very selective and look for the issues that give the buyer an edge in the market. Coins with a lower population than others within the same series, coins with extra eye appeal for the grade, or coins you just don't see very often in the market may all present opportunities for the numismatist. As dealers, placing these coins with their customers allows them a sort of secondary inventory for future repurchases. The collectors wind up making a profit and the dealer can make a second profit after buying the coins back from their satisfied collector customer.

This is one of the primary methods of building a business such as Heritage has done over the years. A perfect example of this is their latest major sale to a collector. The legendary 1885 Trade Dollar was just sold by Heritage to a prominent collector for the grand sum of $3.3 million. This coin is one of five known and it is also the finest one; it is graded PR66 by NGC. Collecting does not get any better than this.
