Next week the ANA World’s Fair of Money comes to the Los Angeles Convention Center, August 5-9. This is usually one of the most active shows of the year. The ANA website states, “The World's Fair of Money may be the most appropriately named coin show in America. It is the largest and best numismatic show in the world and features something for everyone, from novice and beginner collectors to sophisticated numismatists searching for rare coins, paper money, medals and tokens to complete their collections. It’s the coin show to attend if you can only go to one.” The results of this show should give numismatists an outlook to what lies ahead for the coin market for the rest of the year. Many dealers will be arriving in the next few days for some pre-show business and auctions. Heritage Auction Galleries will host a pre ANA sale from July 31 to August 2. The Platinum Night will certainly be the most dramatic portion of the sale with the Dr. Steven Duckor Collection of Barber Quarters taking center stage. Early Gold, along with Stella’s and some magnificent Morgan Dollars will also highlight this worthwhile event. The overall market may not be what it was, but you do not come across this quality of coins in one sale very often. The competition is expected to be quite fierce. The number of adjustments in this week’s Moderns Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide is unusually small compared to recent issues. Most of the modern series are lackluster except for the bullion related series. In Modern Bullion coins, you will find many changes reflecting the upward movement of Gold and Platinum since the most recent issue. There is still considerable interest in the 2009 UHR $20 Gold, Buffalo Gold, especially Fractional coins where supplies are very thin, and Proof Gold Eagles with the original government boxes and paperwork.
