Unbelievable Coin Market

The coin market is so hot that even Columbus, Ohio was successful. The Central States Coin Show was just finished and many dealers were compelled to offer their success stories. Mostly wholesale business but the want lists continue to attract. We are seeing prices jump dramatically in many areas of the market where retailers are just not getting enough coins to satisfy their customers. A good example is the Morgan Dollar in MS65; retailers are pushing these and they are not as plentiful as they had been. Dealers are willing to pay from $135 to $155 depending on the holder and whether it is white or toned. The Heritage Signature Sale was quite successful, but why wouldnt it be? With the amount of wonderful lots they always have in their auctions and the Internet bidding activity they receive, their auctions are a success before they even start. The highlight of this sale was the 1792 Half Disme. It was graded a Specimen67 by PCGS and it realized $1,322,500. There is still plenty of money out there for a dwindling number of rare coins. The FMV prices you see now will not be nearly the same as in the future. Gold and Silver Commems are also inducing lots of buyers and the wholesale levels are variable much in the same manner as the Morgan Dollars. This makes it difficult to fix the FMV even if it is a temporary level. Watch for U.S. Gold as this is a very volatile market as the bullion swings in both directions. The most common coins for the $10 and $20 series will move in concert with the ups and downs of gold. Several dealers have begun to market the modern Silver Commemorative Dollars along with circulated Morgan and Peace Dollars. It is not a bad idea since the modern Dollars are nicer quality coins. The metals are on the upswing again. Gold is now at $658.10 and Silver is $13.94; Platinum is up to $1160. Make sure you check the metals before you make commitments. The swings, especially for Silver have been very dramatic and it does not seem like this is going to change any time soon. -What's Hot?
